Karlsruhe Palace with exciting special exhibitions in the Badisches Landesmuseum; Hardtwald with numerous endangered bird species; the Rhine with its ports, Altrhein nature reserve and Hofgut Maxau; the Alb, which gives the Black Forest valley its name, divides the urban area and flows into the Rhine and Oberwald Zoo, home to elks, antelopes, fallow deer, Przewalski horses and many other wild animals; the Durlach district with its inviting Medieval alleyways and Turmberg, Karlsruhe's local mountain that is accessible by bike – or via Germany's oldest funicular railway.
