Lauterbourg

The little town of Lauterbourg is at the eponymous river Lauter in the Département Bas-Rhin, directly at the German border in the near of Karlsruhe. Worth seeing is the baroque church with Gothic choir from 13th century as well as the city itself as a masterpiece of Vauban.

Once the genious master builder Vauban let develop the border town in the north east of the Alsace to a fortress. Still today there are tracks of the past in spite of grave devastation. However, there remains only a little bit of the town wall. It come from the 15th century and had over 15 towers. Today there is only the Metzgerturm ("Tower of Butcher",frz. Tour des Bouchers) and some wall rests. Until 1761 the Metzgerturm served as prison.
